Several types of foxes and owls live there, as well as grizzly bears, mountain lions, and others too. Big Bear Alpine Zoo acts as a rehabilitation facility for its animals and prides itself on its 90% release after the rehabilitation rate.

Founded after a destructive wildfire in 1959, Big Bear Alpine Zoo began as Moonridge Animal Park with two rescued bobcats and a rescued black bear after the wildfire required their rehabilitation. A year after beginning as a rehabilitation center, Big Bear Alpine Zoo became a zoological facility that now has over 85 species of animals and birds. Masks and social distancing are required to visit the zoo, and their hours of operation are 10am – 4pm.
